Health Barriers

Health barriers span social, personal, environmental, and economic obstacles to a specified health behavior or status. These may include, but are not limited to, insurance status, poverty, employment, access to transportation, and provider availability.

To access the Michigan Department of Technology, Management & Budget's (BTMB) Unemployment Statistics Database, click here. The database will allow one to find unemployment data sorted by geographic types and time periods.

Health Risk Factors and Indicators

Health risk factors are conditions or behaviors that may increase the chance of disease of injury. These may include, but are not limited to, age, sex, genetics, environment, tobacco or illicit drug use, physical activity, and diet/nutrition.

Health indicators are used to assess the health of a population, which can include the national, state or community levels. These may include, but are not limited to, disease prevalence/incidence, prevention screenings, and mortality and morbidity rates.

Michigan Department of Community Health, Vital Statistics 

Vital records are source of statistical information including births, deaths, marriages, divorces, infant mortality, natality and pregnancy.

County and State Health Statistics Profile - Profiles of county and state vital events statistics are presented in a one page summary form for each county and the state as a whole. The profiles contain those data most often requested of the Vital Records & Health Statistics Section.

Produced by the University of Wisconsin and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the County Health Rankings Report procides rankings for each county's health outcomes and health factors in Michigan.

Michigan Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System 

The Michigan Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (MiBRFSS) is an annual, state-level telephone surveys of Michigan residents, aged 18 years and older. The survey provides state-specific, population-based estimates of the prevelance of various behaviors, medical conditions, and preventive health care practices.

This site gives information about indicators of economic security, child health, adolescence, abuse and neglect, and education by region and county.

Right State in Michigan and Its Counties 2011 

Right Start is part of the Kids Count in Michigan project. It looks at Michigan births from 2000 to 2009 and ranks counties based on six key measures of health. It has profiles of counties with over 85,000 people. See the resource here: Right Start in Michigan and Its Counties 2011.

Michigan Profile for Healthy Youth 

The Michigan Profile for Healthy Youth (MiPHY) is an online student health survey offered by the Michigan Departments of Education and Community Health to support local and regional needs assessment. The MiPHY provides student results on health risk behaviors including substance use, violence, physical activity, nutrition, sexual behavior, and emotional health in grades 7, 9, and 11. The survey also measures risk and protective factors most predictive of alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use and violence. Run your county data here.

DHHS, Community Health Status Indicators 

The Community Health Status Indicators (CHSI) provide an overview of key health indicators for local communities. The report can serve as a starting point for community needs assessment, quantification of vulnerable populations, and measurement of preventable diseases, disabilities, and deaths. Uniform Data System

The Uniform Data System (UDS) tracks a variety of information, including patient demographics, services provided, staffing, clinical indicators, utilization rates, costs, and revenues. UDS data are collected at the grantee (individual CHC), state, and national levels. It is released annually.

The data is reviewed to ensure compliance with legislative and regulatory requirements, improve health center performance and operations, and report overall program accomplishments. The data helps to identify trends over time, establish or expand targeted programs and identify effective services and interventions to improve the health of underserved communities and vulnerable populations. .

UDS Mapper

HRSA, John Snow, Inc. and the Robert Graham Center have collaborated to develop a mapping and decision-support tool driven primarily from data within the Uniform Data System (UDS) and the US Census. The UDS Mapper is designed to help inform users about the current geographic distribution and penetration of Health Center Program grantees and Federally Qualified Health Center (FQCH) Look-Alikes. You have to register for access, but it is open to all users. Click here to do so.

Health Resources and Services Administration Data and Statistics

The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) is an agency within the US Department of Health and Human Services. As the Nation’s Access Agency, HRSA focuses on uninsured, underserved, and special needs populations. HRSA Data provides access points to current HRSA information, health resources, and demographic data for reporting on HRSA activities. In 2010, HRSA produced a document to assist health centers in assessing need in their community and/or for their target populations called Data Resources for Demonstrating Need for Primary Care Services. The data resources focus on barriers to care, health indicators, and disparities.
