HIV

The AIDS epidemic has taken an enormous toll since its discovery in the early 1980s.  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that more than one million people are living with HIV in the United States and one in five (21%) of those people living with HIV is unaware of their infection.

The epidemic has hit hardest among populations who are poor, lack health insurance, are disenfranchised from the health care system, and are from communities of color. Since the beginning of the epidemic, racial and ethnic minorities have been disproportionately impacted by HIV infections.

Michigan Primary Care Association has joined Michigan’s Department of Community Health in an effort to increase HIV testing at Community Health Centers. Individuals who are tested for HIV and are aware of their status can learn to modify risky behaviors.  HIV testing also allows for early detection of the disease which can lead to critical life saving treatment.
