MPCA Submits Letter of Support on E-cigarette Legislation
Friday, April 11, 2014
Along with more than a dozen other Michigan health care organizations, last month MPCA signed on to a Letter of Support for HB 5393, legislation recently introduced by State Representative Gail Haines (R-Lake Angelus) regarding the definition of "tobacco product."
HB 5393 modifies the definition of "tobacco product" to include e-cigarettes in an effort to prevent the sale and use of e-cigarette products by minors. While the e-cigarette industry promotes their product as a safe alternative to smoking, e-cigarette aerosol is a source of pollution and toxins and no reliable research has proven these products are harmless.
As the use of e-cigarettes continues to increase, especially among youth, MPCA believes the state should take the necessary precautions to prevent a new generation of smokers by including e-cigarettes in the legislation definition of "tobacco product."
