MPCA Supports Health Center Initiatives to Increase, Improve Delivery of Health Care to Veterans

With support from Michigan Primary Care Association (MPCA), Michigan Health Centers are exploring and implementing initiatives to increase access to care for veterans and their families and to ensure the care delivered is meeting veteran-specific needs.

In northeast Michigan, MPCA and Alcona Health Center have been hosting Alcona County Veteran Services roundtable discussions to connect veteran services organizations and safety net providers. Through the roundtables, these organizations and providers are collaborating to improve how services are delivered to local veterans. For example, the group provided input to Jeff Cassidy, Healthcare Analyst at the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency (MVAA) as he developed a document that has been submitted to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) for review. Once approved, this document will help all safety net providers identify patients who are eligible for health care benefits and other services available through the VA.

On the west side of the state, Cherry Street Health Services is working to integrate VA telehealth services for behavioral health, disease management, and case management services. Under this model, established through a Memorandum of Understanding, the Health Center will provide the compliant space and a non-licensed staff member to turn on the equipment used for two-way communication during each visit. The VA will provide the equipment and handle patient and provider scheduling. Discussions are underway to provide these same services at two other Michigan Health Centers. MPCA also continues to support the Michigan Department of Community Health’s recommendation that health care providers participate in the Citizen Soldier Support Program (CSSP). To prepare civilian providers to address post deployment issues facing veterans and their families, CSSP has partnered with Area Health Education Centers and medical providers from the VA, United States Navy, and United States Public Health Service to create on-site and online courses. Nearly 3,000 providers nationwide have received these day-long on-site trainings and well over 18,000 providers have enrolled in the online training including providers from all 50 States.
