Thank You to Advocates Who Emailed Congress During Tsunami Week
Tuesday, November 4, 2014
Thank you to the 362 advocates in Michigan who sent a total of 1,175 emails to members of the Michigan Congressional Delegation during Access is the Answer “tsunami” week October 27-31. You were among 6,900+ Health Center advocates from across the country who sent over 23,000 emails to help protect the future of the Health Center program and access to care.
Our work is not done to urge Congress to "Fix the Cliff," however. Every Health Center - including EVERY Health Center in Michigan - is called on to take three action steps during phase two of the Access is the Answer campaign:
- Collect local support letters in your community
- Publish at least 1 piece of local media before the end of 2014 about the projected impact of the funding cliff to your Health Center, patients, and community
- Educate returning and newly elected Members of Congress about the vital role your Health Center plays in the community and the urgent need to fix the Health Center funding cliff
Meanwhile, as advocates across the country were sending emails last week, a letter signed by more than 100 leading national organizations was sent to Congressional leaders calling for immediate action during the lame duck session to prevent the scheduled cuts to the Health Center, National Health Service Corps, and Teaching Health Centers programs. Without Congressional action, federal funding for the Health Center program will be reduced by up to 70% at the end of fiscal year 2015, and the National Health Service Corps and Teaching Health Centers Graduate Medical Education program will be eliminated entirely.
