Michigan Primary Care Association—the voice for Health Centers and other community-based providers in Michigan—honored Michigan Association of Health Plans Executive Director Rick Murdock with a Legacy of Leadership Award during the 2015 MPCA Legislative Forum in Lansing on March 4.

The Legacy of Leadership Award is MPCA’s premier award for recognizing exemplary leadership that has significantly impacted Michigan Health Center patients, the medically underserved, and local communities.

“I am honored to present this award to my friend and colleague, Rick Murdock, for his remarkable leadership that helped catalyze the Healthy Michigan Plan becoming a reality. Rick translated his vision for a healthier Michigan through expanding Michigan’s Medicaid program as a win for all Michiganders by saving lives and saving money,” said Kim Sibilsky, CEO, Michigan Primary Care Association.

Since the Healthy Michigan Plan launched less than one year ago, on April 1, 2014, it has strengthened Michigan’s health care safety net. Approximately 200 certified enrollment staff at Michigan Health Centers have been integral in assisting Michiganders in learning about and enrolling in the coverage option that best meets their needs, including the Healthy Michigan Plan.

“Michigan Health Center enrollment staff witness on a daily basis the tremendous need for affordable health care coverage that exists in our state. The Healthy Michigan Plan is improving the health and well-being of individuals and families across the state by increasing access to comprehensive health care, and it is giving enrollees the peace of mind that coverage brings,” said Sibilsky.

Michigan’s 40 Health Center organizations are on the front lines of health care, serving more than 600,000 state residents at over 240 locations. Many of these individuals and families would go without health care were it not for their local Health Center. The doors of Health Centers are open to all, regardless of insurance status and with fees based on household income.
