Detroit Central City Receives Warm Donation
Thursday, September 3, 2015
Detroit Central City (DCC) received a warm and wonderful donation from The Empowerment Plan Detroit of 300 unique coats. The coats are worn normally during the day and convert into a sleeping bag at night. When not in use, the coat collapses into an over-the-shoulder bag.
The coats will be handed out by DCC staff to individuals who fall into the cycle of chronically homeless, don't have a permanent residence, are living on the streets or who don't have a warm winter coat through case management services, supportive housing programs and Projects for Assistance in Transition from Homelessness (PATH). The PATH program is an outreach program which links homeless, adults diagnosed with a mental illness to on-going mental health services while securing short- and long-term housing. The populations served by PATH do not avail themselves to services in a traditional manner and have usually experienced difficulty remaining under traditional mental health treatment.
The Empowerment Plan Detroit is a non-profit organization that provides a group of homeless women from local shelters new opportunities as trained seamstresses in an attempt to regain control of their lives by providing them steady employment.
The donation was generously funded through the Detroit Wayne Mental Health Authority.
