Baldwin Family Health Care Receives Grant to Improve Oral Health
Thursday, January 14, 2016
Baldwin Family Health Care recently received $5,000 from the Delta Dental Foundation to assist in completing a pediatric suite to include the purchase of a dental chair for its Baldwin location.
Strides have been taken in each of Family Health Care’s dental locations to ease the anxiety surrounding dental treatment. Comfortable exam chairs and the use of ceiling placed monitors aids in calming and through distraction while watching a fun cartoon or video game about teeth. Children can choose from a variety of cartoons and movies, and there are educational selections for adults as well.
Because a child’s anxiety can make treatment difficult to impossible, these cases previously were referred to a pedodonist specialist to administer sedation. The referral meant families had to travel more than an hour for treatment creating additional expenses for the parent, time away from school for the child and a missed work day for the parent.
“Tooth decay is the country’s most common chronic childhood disease today, and children in the U.S. miss 51 million hours of school each year because of dental-related issues’, said Kathy Sather, CEO of Family Health Care. “If we are able to reduce anxiety with these conveniences, we can treat locally. Going to the dentist does not have to be scary. Dental care is key to improving overall health. We can help to avoid expensive and painful health issues down the road and reduce the time the child and parent have to spend traveling out of the area.”
“We are proud to recognize the work being done by Baldwin Family Health Care by selecting it as one of our grant recipients,” said Teri Battaglieri, Delta Dental Foundation director. “By increasing access to dental care, we can help improve the oral and overall health and well-being of children and adults by preventing serious health issues down the road.”
