Another Successful 2016 MPCA Annual Conference 

Over 350 participants, presenters, sponsors, and exhibitors attended the 2016 MPCA Annual Conference, "Enriching Patient Care in an Era of Emergencies & Epidemics," August 14-16, at Grand Traverse Resort in Acme, MI. Experts presented during general and breakout sessions on topics ranging from the Flint water crisis, to social determinants, community health center emergency preparedness, the value of interprofessional oral health practice, and over and under prescribing, amo ng many more.

35 Michigan Health Centers Receive HHS Quality Improvement Grant Awards

Thirty-five Michigan Health Centers received a total of more than $2.5 million in grants from the Department of Health and Human Services to expand current quality improvement systems and infrastructure to improve the delivery of primary care services. More than $100 million in grants were provided to 1,340 Health Centers in all 50 states. Read the full news release.

Community Health Worker Updates

New MPCA Resource: CHW Toolkit
Check out the CHW ToolKit as it provides Outreach and Enrollment information, trainings, and useful tools to start and implement a CHW program. If there is any information you would like to share with MPCA, or add to the toolkit, please send your resources to Brittani Barkley.

Community Health Worker Network
This fall MPCA will launch a new Community Health Worker Peer Communication Network. The network will the opportunity for CHWs in Health Centers to communicate with others from different programs and Health Centers, receive training, receive statewide and national news updates, attend webinars, and more! CHWs and interested health center staff can contact Brittani Barkley to be added to the CHW Network.

Enabling Services Annual Forum October 3
Please mark your calendar for October 3 to join MPCA for the Enabling Services Annual Forum: Connecting Consumers to Care and Community. The event will be held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Lansing. The day will feature practical sessions on building strategic partnerships, assisting with Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Medicaid appeals, social media outreach, and more!

Asthma Management and Education Training November 3

The Michigan Primary Care Association, in collaboration with The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America – Michigan Chapter, will present Asthma Management: Primary Care Matters Most on Thursday, November 3, 2016, from 8:30 am - 12 noon. 

This program will provide individuals who work with asthma patients the latest information on the pathophysiology of asthma and allergy; current treatment methods; effective techniques for patient education; and ways to prevent asthma episodes. Of note is the prevalence of asthma and lead poisoning among urban children. 

Who should attend?  Anyone who interacts with asthma patients, including physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, nurse managers, medical assistants, community health workers, case management specialists, referral specialists, and all non-clinicians are encouraged to attend to get up-to-date asthma management guidelines.

The training qualifies for 3.0 hours of CEUs for Michigan Nurses.  Application for CME credit will be filed with the American Academy of Family Physicians for 3.0 CMEs.  Certified Asthma Educators earn asthma specific CEU's which are needed for recertification

Northwest Michigan Health Services Receives HRSA Grant

Northwest Michigan Health Services will receive $200,000 each year for three years to improve the quality of care for populations with high rates of chronic conditions. The Small Health Care Provider Quality Improvement grants from the Health Resources and Services Administration will focus on providing support to rural primary care providers with the implementation of quality improvement activities and furthering coordination of care for patients across health care settings.

They will be required to use an evidence-based quality improvement model, assess practice changes and their impact on performance, and use health information technology to collect and report data. Objectives of the program include improved health outcomes for patients, enhanced chronic disease management, and better engagement of patients and their caregivers.

Clinical Quality Assessment Survey Open

Michigan Primary Care Association to release the Annual Clinical Quality Assessment. This evaluation addresses Health Information Technology, Meaningful Use, and Patient Centered Medical Home certification, among other important issues. This information allows MPCA to better serve you through data-informed decisions. Please ensure that the survey is completed by one member of your organization. If you are not the individual who should complete the survey please see that it reaches them.

HIPAA Privacy and Security Basic Training September 15

This one-day training session we will take a closer look at the requirements for the HIPAA Privacy and Security Rules, as well as the Breach Notification Rule.  You will learn who these rules apply to, what information they protect, and the supporting documentation you should have in place.  We will address a number of common HIPAA compliance issues and break down the requirement for providers to conduct a security risk assessment.  The training session will help you identify if you have a breach of health information, and will explain your breach notification responsibilities.  You will learn how to prepare for the OCR HIPAA audits which are currently underway, to help you avoid the large penalties for HIPAA noncompliance that we now hear about on an almost weekly basis.

Who should attend:  IT directors, compliance officers, chief operating officers, quality assurance/improvement staff, clinical quality leadership, HIT managers.
