The AIDS epidemic has taken an enormous toll since its discovery in the early 1980s. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that more than one million people are living with HIV in the United States and one in five (21%) of those people living with HIV is unaware of their status. Hardest hit are populations who are poor, lack health insurance, are disenfranchised from the health care system, and are from communities of color. Since the beginning of the epidemic, racial and ethnic minorities have been disproportionately impacted by HIV infections.

Michigan Primary Care Association (MPCA) has joined the Michigan Department of Health & Human Services in an effort to increase HIV testing at Michigan Health Centers. Individuals who are tested for HIV and are aware of their status can learn to modify risk behaviors. HIV testing also allows for early detection of the disease which can lead to critical life saving treatment.

Michigan Health Centers Leading in Development
of a New Model of HIV Care

In 2012, four Michigan Health Centers were selected to participate in the nationwide Health HIV Learning Community. The goal of the program in to transform the way that HIV testing and care is provided, and to increase access to quality and comprehensive care in primary care settings. Participating Health Centers are educating clinicians and building community partnerships to create a seamless system of care. Michigan Health Centers enrolled in the Learning Community include Health Delivery Inc., InterCare Community Health Network, Oakland Primary Health Services and Western Wayne Family Health Centers.
