Call Your Elected Officials
Share |

Calling elected officials is best when time constraints make personal visits or emails impossible. Calls are logged in a chart in the elected official’s office. Legislative offices count the number of calls they receive on an issue (pro and con) and share that information with the elected official. A well-timed call can be especially influential when combined with calls from other Health Center advocates on the same issue.

Important Phone Numbers

If you don't know your elected official’s phone number, call the:

Capitol Hill Switchboard (For U.S. Senators and Representatives): 202.224.3121

Michigan House Clerk’s Office: 517.373.0135

Michigan Senate Switchboard: 517.373.2400

  • Not sure whether to call the elected official's district or Washington, DC, office? Calls to the district office are as effective as calls to Washington, DC, unless your issue is being heard or decided within 24 hours.

  • Ask to speak to the elected official, legislative assistant, or health policy aide. If you can’t reach them, leave a concise message.

  • If you speak to someone other than the elected official, write down his/her name so you can ask for that person the next time you call.

  • State your name and address, why you are calling, and that you are a constituent.

  • Briefly explain the Health Center's impact on the community and individuals the elected official represents.

  • Keep the call brief, no more than 3-4 minutes.

  • Ask for a written response.

  • Send a thank you note!
