Perinatal Oral Health Guide Released
Did you know, caries is a transmissible disease and mothers or other caregivers may unknowingly transfer bacteria to their children through the exchange of saliva? Or that research indicates a potential link between preterm birth and poor oral health? Since pregnancy is a critical period in which women may be more likely to adopt healthy behaviors, it is imperative oral health is prioritized by medical and dental professionals.
The Oral Health Program with the Michigan Department of Health & Human Services has released a document to assist in prioritizing the oral health of pregnant women in Michigan. The guide, During Pregnancy, the Mouth Matters: A Guide to Michigan Perinatal Oral Health, is the result of collaboration of numerous statewide partners and the dedication of a diverse group of health care professionals.
The resource document includes a customizable referral form, pharmaceutical recommendations, a checklist for a basic oral health screening, tear-out guidance for medical and dental professionals and much more!
If you have questions or seek additional information on perinatal oral health and/or other oral health concerns, visit michigan.gov/oralhealth or email email@example.com.
Call to Action - Health Center Appropriations Letters
Earlier this week, the National Association for Community Health Centers (NACHC) released a "Health Center Funding Dear Colleague" letter, a bi-partisan letter by Representatives Gus Bilirakis (R-FL) and Gene Green (D-TX) and the bi-partisan Senate letter led by Senators Roger Wicker (R-MS) and Debbie Stabenow (D-MI).
By signing on to the letters, Members of Congress publicly show their support for Health Centers. The signatures received will influence how successful we are in securing funding for FY2017. Click here to contact your Member of Congress and to view copies of both the Bilirakis-Green House Health Center Appropriations Letter and the Wicker-Stabenow Senate Health Center Appropriations Letter.
The deadline to sign on to the House letter is March 19, 2016, and the deadline to co-sign the Senate letter is March 15, 2016. To check the most up-to-date list of co-signers and access supporting resources, refer to the Federal Affairs page of the NACHC website here.
Zika Virus Reported in Michigan
According to a February 24, 2016 news release from the Michigan Department of Health & Human Services (MDHHS), Michigan health officials have identified the first confirmed case of Zika virus in a Michigan resident.
The patient, an Ingham County female, contracted the virus when she traveled to a country where Zika virus is being transmitted. The patient presented symptoms upon return and is not pregnant.
MDHHS reminds Michigan residents traveling to warmer climates, or areas where Zika virus is present, to take precautions to prevent mosquito bites, and if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, to consider postponing the trip.
For the most up-to-date information on the Zika virus, visit the CDC's website.
Children’s Dental Health Month Project Provides Education and Community Outreach for Cassopolis Family Clinic Network
February is Children’s Dental Health Month and Cassopolis Family Clinic Network (CFCN), a Federally Qualified Health Center celebrated the month by increasing awareness on the importance of oral health in their community.
CFCN believes a great life begins with a healthy smile and it was this belief that launched the Children’s Dental Health Month Project. “Good oral health is important to overall health and wellbeing. “This project started six years ago simply to increase awareness on the importance of good oral health care for students in Cassopolis Public Schools,” mentions Mary Geegan Middleton, Chief Executive Officer, CFCN. “We have now expanded the program to include Niles Community Schools and Niles Brandywine and with the expansion, provide free oral health kits to almost 6,400 kids. It’s a small gesture really, to give toothbrushes, toothpaste and dental floss to children, but if it helps educate them on taking good care of their teeth so they can be healthy, it is the right thing to do.”
In 2016, each oral health kit included an age appropriate toothbrush and toothpaste, floss and information on the Federally Qualified Health Center. In addition, pre-K to 6th grade students received an activity book, stickers and bookmark from Crest to help provide education on the importance of brushing their teeth. In addition, students in 7th to 12th grade received an informational brochure on how to properly care for their teeth from Patterson Dental, a dental supply company.
Distribution of the dental packs was completed by CFCN staff and Sparkleman, the Crest mascot, who visited the schools and created additional excitement. (Photos of the event can be found on CFCN’s Facebook page.)
The project has had many successes, but two specifically come to Middleton’s mind. “In 2015, a week after the dental packs were distributed, CFCN received personal phone calls from parents thanking us for putting the oral health kits together, and the second is the action that resulted from the distribution – appointments were made at the Cassopolis Family Clinic Dental and they are now seen on a regular basis.”
