April is Child Abuse Prevention Month

Preventing child abuse is a community responsibility that needs involvement from all Michiganders according to a press release issued by the Michigan Department of Health & Human Services. The April 4 release, along with a proclamation from Governor Snyder declaring April as Child Abuse Prevention Month, serves as a reminder that everyone can help protect children from abuse and neglect.

Michael Foley, executive director, Children's Trust Fund stated in the release "Michigan's children can be protected through the power of one person, one community, one dollar or one action."

Michigan has 23,813 confirmed cases of child abuse or neglect in fiscal year 2015. For more information on how you can make a difference, click here.

SIM Webinars Scheduled

The Michigan Department of Health & Human Services (MDHHS) is hosting a series of webinars to learn about and provide feedback on the implementation of Michigan’s SIM initiative.

Over the past 12 months, the MDHHS has evaluated the potential capacity for changes to the way care is delivered and paid for in Michigan, and developed strategies for executing these changes in specific regions and across the state.

As a result, the MDHHS will host three webinars to share the status of the SIM initiative and describe its approach to increasing the number of Patient-Centered Medical Homes (PCMHs) in the state and pilot two new types of entities: Accountable Systems of Care (ASCs) and Community Health Innovation Regions (CHIRs). The webinars will also include an overview of the technological infrastructure and payment models the state intends to use to support these models, as well as collaborative learning networks designed to support implementation.

Webinar Schedule:
SIM Overview: April 19, 2016, 11:30 am - 1 pm ET
PCMHs and ASCs, April 20, 2016, 9:30 - 11 am ET
CHIRS and Collaborative Learning Networks, April 21, 2016, 8:30 - 10 am ET

**Please Note: Participation in each webinar is limited to 500 people. If more than one person from your organization plans to participate, please share a phone line and computer screen.**

HRSA Grant More Than Doubled to Provide Additional Services in Flint

On April 1, 2016, Health Resources and Services Administration announced an $8 million grant to support Maternal, Infant and Early Childhood Home Visiting Program in Michigan.

This grant is more than double what Michigan received in 2015 ($3.5 million); noting the added need for visits to occur in Flint due to the water crisis. The funds will help pay for programs that allow nurses, social workers and other professionals to visit pregnant women and families with young children to provide support for preventive health and helping mothers secure prenatal care, improve diets and reduce and/or eliminate tobacco, alcohol and illegal substance use. Major Reorganization at MDHHS

On April 1, 2016, the Michigan Department of Health & Human Services (MDHHS) announced major changes in the structure of the Population Health and Community Services Administration.

Under the changes, which take effect April 18, 2016, the Office of Local Health Services will be reassigned to the deputy director of Population Health and Community Services. The move elevates the Office of Local Health Services to the MDHHS Executive Office.

Effective April 18, 2016, within Population Health and Community Services, there will be a new Bureau of Epidemiology and Population Health consisting of the former Bureau of Disease Control, Prevention and Epidemiology and the former Bureau of Family, Maternal and Child Health.

In addition, MDHHS is renaming the Bureau of Local Health and Administrative Services the Bureau of Health and Wellness.

The new Bureau of Epidemiology and Population Health will consist of the Division of Family and Community Health; Division of Communicable Diseases; Division of Lifecourse Epidemiology and Genomics; Division of Environmental Health; and the Zoonotic Disease and Special Projects Section.

The Children's Special Health Care Services Division will become part of the Medical Services Administration and the Division of Immunization and the Women's Infants and Children Division will move to the Bureau of Health and Wellness.
