Conference Committee Finalizes FY 2016 Michigan Department of Community Health Budget

In an announcement made on May 20, 2015, Governor Rick Snyder and legislative leaders agreed on spending targets for the fiscal year 2016 budget. The agreed upon spending targets includes an additional $400 million in General Fund money to help repair Michigan roads and bridges. The agreement is an important step as lawmakers and Governor Snyder continue work on the 2016 budget, which goes into effect on October 1, 2015. The agreement marks the fifth straight year that Michigan’s budget is on course for completion in June.

This morning, the House-Senate conference committee on the Department of Community Health (DCH) budget met to reconcile the differences between the budgets proposed by the Michigan Senate and House of Representatives, including noteworthy topics for Michigan Health Centers such as the statewide expansion of Healthy Kids Dental and funding for Graduate Medical Education (GME).

Under the final version of the budget for DCH, now a part of the Department of Health and Human Services, the Healthy Kids Dental program will see an increase of $37 million ($12.7 million General Fund) to expand services into the final three counties not currently included (Kent, Oakland, and Wayne) to cover children ages 0-12. As for GME, the final budget restores Executive Order funding cuts to maintain GME funding at the same level as it received at the beginning of the 2014-15 fiscal year. The budget was unanimously adopted by today by the conference committee.

Stay tuned to future eUpdates for more information as the budgets are finalized and sent to the Governor for signature.
