Meet Your State Legislators at MPCA Legislative Forum

If you haven't registered yet to attend the 2015 MPCA Legislative Forum (#MPCALF15) taking place March 4 in Lansing, there's still time. MPCA Names New Enabling Services Director

It is our pleasure to announce that Julie Tatko has been selected to serve as Enabling Services Director at MPCA. In her new position she will administer all components of the Linking Clinical Care with Community Supports program and will also direct all of MPCA’s enabling services activities including outreach and enrollment activities. Julie previously served as Enabling Service Consultant at MPCA. Click here for a list of all MPCA staff.  

MPCA Hiring Communications Coordinator

MPCA Hosting Webinar to Jump Start Your 50th Health Center Anniversary Celebration

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Health Center program - an opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments of what began as a demonstration program back in 1965 and has now grown into a national network of over 1,200 Health Centers serving 23 million patients nationwide at more than 9,000 locations. MPCA is excited to celebrate with Michigan Health Centers our journey of increasing access to care across the state. Governor's Executive Order Creates New Department of Health and Human Services

In follow-up to his State of the State address last month, Governor Snyder issued an executive order on February 6 to create the new Department of Health and Human Services. The goal of merging the Departments of Community Health (MDCH) and Human Services (DHS) is to align family and health related services and ensure services are delivered in a "person-centered way with less fragmentation." The Governor also announced the appointment of Nick Lyon as the director of the new department. Lyon has been serving as director of MDCH and interim director of DHS. Read more

Governor Snyder Presenting 2016 Budget Recommendation February 11

Governor Rick Snyder will present his fiscal year 2016 executive budget recommendation before a joint session of the House and Senate Appropriations Committees on Wednesday, February 11. The FY 2016 budget goes into effect October 1, 2015. The state faces General Fund shortfalls of about $325 million for the current fiscal year and $532 million for FY 2016. As part of his budget presentation, the Governor will also present an Executive Order to address the current fiscal year shortfall. We will report on his recommendations in next week's issue of the MPCA eUpdate.

MDCH Announces Enrollment Launch for MI Health Link

The Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH) announced last week that enrollment in MI Health Link for eligible residents in Phase 1 counties is now open, with services beginning March 1. MI Health Link is Michigan’s demonstration project to integrate care for individuals eligible for both Medicare and Medicaid. It is being launched in four regions of the state in two phases. Phase 1 includes the entire Upper Peninsula and eight counties in southwest Michigan, including Barry, Berrien, Branch, Calhoun, Cass, Kalamazoo, St. Joseph, and Van Buren. Phase 2 includes Macomb and Wayne counties. Read more

Reminder: 340B Annual Recertification Underway

The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) requires that all 340B covered entities recertify their eligibility every year in order to continue participating in the 340B Drug Pricing Program. Recertification began January 28, 2015, and continues through March 11, 2015. Click here for information about the annual recertification. It is critical that Health Centers recertify before the March 11 deadline in order to continue participating in the 340B Program. If you have any questions on the recertification process, contact the 340B Prime Vendor Program at 1.888.340.2787 or

NACHC "Access Is The Answer" Teleforum February 19

To provide an update on the Health Center funding cliff and the advocacy action steps YOU and all advocates are needed to take to help ensure Congress acts to fix the cliff, NACHC is hosting a national teleforum on February 19 at 2 pm ET. Meanwhile, during a Senate Finance Committee hearing last week about the Health and Human Services (HHS) fiscal year 2016 budget request, HHS Secretary Sylvia Burwell answered questions about the Health Center funding cliff. Click here to watch a video recording of her remarks.  

First CEO of Michigan Health Endowment Fund Appointed

The Michigan Health Endowment Fund board of directors has selected Paul Hillegonds to be the Fund's first CEO. Mr. Hillegonds formerly served as Speaker of the Michigan House of Representatives and was most recently senior vice president at DTE Energy. He currently chairs the Regional Transit Authority in southeast Michigan. He will begin his role as MHEF's CEO on March 16. 

Anthem Cyber Attack

The national insurance company of Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield announced last week that it was the victim of a large-scale cyber attack, putting the personal identifying information of approximately 80 million former customers, current customers, and employees at risk. While Anthem and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan (BCBSM) are two separate companies, BCBSM is actively investigating any possible impacts on its members. Read more

BPHC Releases New Quality Improvement Webpage

The Bureau of Primary Health Care (BPHC) has released a new Quality Improvement Assistance webpage to provide QI resources and information for Health Centers. Included is a recording of the technical assistance presentation for grantees receiving fiscal year 2015 Quality Improvement Awards announced in December. Click here for a list of Michigan awardees.

BPHC Extends Workforce Recruitment Survey Deadline

The deadline for responding to the Bureau of Primary Health Care's 2014 Workforce Recruitment Survey is close of business on February 20. Data collected from this brief survey regarding veterans in the Health Center workforce will enable BPHC to provide the training and technical assistance needed to support Health Centers in their hiring efforts. Click here to access the survey.
