ADVOCACY

Continued "Access is the Answer" Campaign Efforts Critical

The Access is the Answer campaign is an ongoing effort to convince Congress that they must act immediately to fix the looming Health Center funding cliff. With the Health Center Program facing a 70% federal funding cut at the end of fiscal year 2015, we can't stress enough how critical it is that Health Center advocates take time to make advocacy a priority by:
As of this week, 3.7% (4,132) of the total number of petition signatures nationwide (111,346) are from Michigan (363 Michigan advocates signed the electronic petition and 3,769 signed a hardcopy petition). In addition, five Michigan Health Centers (Advantage Health Centers, Alcona Health Centers, Center for Family Health, CHASS, and Health Delivery, Inc.) reported collecting 100 letters of community support, which accounts for about 7% of the national total of 1,390 letters collected. Thank you for your advocacy! It's not too late to join the Campaign by collecting petition signatures and support letters!

Remember to Post Your National Health Center Week Event

Posting the details of your Health Center's National Health Center Week 2014 event is a great way to get the attention of elected officials and potential sponsors. With the week-long celebration kicking off on August 10th, many Health Centers across the country and in Michigan have already posted the details of their events, including:
  • Baldwin Family Health Care
  • FQHC Council of Southeastern Michigan
  • Health Delivery, Inc.
  • MidMichigan Community Health Services
  • Sterling Area Health Center
  • Western Wayne Family Health Centers
MPCA is excited to hear the event plans from ALL Michigan Health Centers. If you need any help in planning your event or inviting elected officials, please email Dana Lawrence.

MPCA Seeks Input on Status of Michigan Health Center Workforce

MPCA is seeking feedback from Michigan Health Center human resources staff to assess the current status of workforce at Health Centers across the state, training needs and topics they would like to learn more about to increase proficiency, and the preferred delivery methods for trainings throughout the year. As this feedback will guide MPCA's workforce training program moving forward, feedback from every Michigan Health Center is critical to ensure needs are being met. The survey takes only 5-10 minutes to complete and will be available until June 27. Please coordinate with the Human Resources staff at your Health Center to ensure that someone from your Health Center completes the survey. Please click here to access the survey. If you have any questions, contact Ryan Grinnell, MPCA's Workforce Development Specialist.

"Reaching this milestone attests to the tremendous demand for affordable health care coverage that exists in our state, as witnessed every day by the staff at Michigan Health Centers," said Kim Sibilsky, MPCA's CEO. Click here to read Kim's response in its entirety. Healthy Michigan Plan enrollment statistics are updated every Monday at 3 pm and posted on the MDCH website. This past Monday, June 16, enrollment was at 297,909; by Wednesday it had exceeded 300,000. MPCA continues to provide enrollment analysis by county each week, which includes the percentage of enrollees by county that are enrolled in a health plan.

Changes to Michigan J-1 Conrad 30 Program Application Cycle

Michigan’s J-1 Conrad 30 program is an excellent recruitment tool to help bring newly graduated International Medical Graduates to practice at your Health Center. As one of the requirements for the Conrad 30 program is that the provider must serve in a Health Professional Shortage Area, all Health Center Grantees are eligible to participate. Additionally, as safety net and primary care providers, all FQHCs meet the “priority criteria” for the program, ultimately increasing their application’s competitiveness. This year’s application cycle will only be open October 1-30, 2014, so now is the time to plan ahead. For more information, please contact Ryan Grinnell, MPCA’s Workforce Development Specialist.

MiCHWA Requesting Response to 2014 Community Health Worker Survey

The Michigan Community Health Worker Alliance (MiCHWA) is surveying programs and agencies that employ Community Health Workers (CHWs). All agencies that have at least one CHW are encouraged to take the survey, which closes July 21. Click here to learn more about the survey. Survey responses will provide crucial data to assist state and local officials, health and human service system representatives, and health and human service payer organizations in understanding the growing array of CHW activities statewide to shape CHW policy and financing agenda in Michigan.
