Access is the Answer Campaign Work Continues

It is critical that Health Center Advocates continue work on the Access is the Answer campaign by collecting support letters and petition signatures until the Health Center funding cliff is fixed! Advocates should also set up visits with Members of Congress this summer while they are home for Congressional recess weeks (National Health Center Week is a perfect opportunity) to present all collected materials and showcase the outpouring of community support for Health Centers back home. Need a little inspiration? Check out some keys to success in this recent Campaign for America's Health Centers' blog post. Make sure to continue reporting the letters and petition signatures your Michigan Health Center collects by using the report form on the Campaign for America’s Health Centers website OR by emailing and Dana Lawrence, MPCA's Director of Communications & Grassroots - and let us know about scheduled visits from Members of Congress, as well.

You're Invited to Healthy Safety Net Symposium

Many MPCA staff members are planning to attend Healthy Safety Net 2014: A Blues Symposium on September 8, 2014, 10 am-3:30 pm at the Kellogg Hotel & Conference Center in East Lansing. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan would like to extend an invitation for you to join us. The agenda is excellent. MPCA CEO Kim Sibilsky will present on a panel sharing the front line perspectives, challenges, and opportunities. The Healthy Safety Net symposium is a unique opportunity to engage with experts in safety net health care in Michigan. We encourage you to attend and look forward to seeing you there. Click here to register today.

Governor Snyder Signs Legislation Supporting Breastfeeding Mothers

This week Governor Snyder signed three bills (Senate Bill 674 and House Bills 5591 and 5592) which prevent discrimination against breastfeeding mothers by ensuring that women have the right to breastfeed in a public place, and specify that a mother breastfeeding in a public place is not guilty of indecent exposure or obscene conduct. Read more

Michigan Conrad 30 Program Application Packets Now Available

Michigan’s 2014-2015 Conrad 30 J1 Waiver program is underway and all Health Center Grantees are eligible to participate. This is an excellent recruitment tool to help bring International Medical Graduates to practice at your Health Center. By virtue of being a safety net provider, FQHCs meet the priority criteria for the program. This year’s application process has been updated on the Medical Opportunities in Michigan website under the Conrad 30 tab, and the application packet is available upon request. This year’s application cycle will only be open October 1-30, 2014, so now is the time to plan ahead. As a reminder, a completed Conrad 30 J1 Waiver application requires a signed employment contract, so it is important to begin the recruitment process now! For more information, please contact Ryan Grinnell, MPCA’s Workforce Development Specialist.

New Report Shows Significant Impact of Health Center Funding Cliff on Patients

Last week the Geiger Gibson/RCHN Community Health Foundation Research Collaborative at Milken Institute School of Public Health at the George Washington University released a new report showing that if lawmakers do not act to fix the Health Center funding cliff, and if more states don't expand Medicaid, the number of patients cared for by Health Centers could fall more than 25% - that's 7 million patients - by 2020. Click here to read the report. A snapshot of the findings is also depicted in an infographic.
