ADVOCACY

Access is the Answer Campaign Work Continues

It is critical that Health Center Advocates continue work on the Access is the Answer campaign by collecting support letters and petition signatures until the Health Center funding cliff is fixed! Advocates should also set up visits with Members of Congress this summer while they are home for Congressional recess weeks (National Health Center Week is a perfect opportunity) to present all collected materials and showcase the outpouring of community support for Health Centers back home. Need a little inspiration? Check out some keys to success in this recent Campaign for America's Health Centers' blog post. Make sure to continue reporting the letters and petition signatures your Michigan Health Center collects by using the report form on the Campaign for America’s Health Centers website OR by emailing grassroots@nachc.com and Dana Lawrence, MPCA's Director of Communications & Grassroots - and let us know about scheduled visits from Members of Congress, as well.

How is Your Health Center Celebrating National Health Center Week?

More Michigan Health Centers have posted on the National Health Center Week website details about their upcoming events taking place August 10-16 in celebration of #NHCW2014! Posting your Health Center's event (no matter how big or small) is a great way to get the attention of elected officials and potential sponsors, so if you haven't posted your event yet, we encourage you to post it today. Also, check out the robust website for tips on inviting your elected officials; fact sheets, downloadable social media tools and templates, and a media toolkit; information about the Picture and Video Contest; and information about Public Housing Health Centers Day (August 12), Health Care for the Homeless Day (August 13), and Farmworker Health Day (August 14).

MPCA Accepting Applications for Clinical Services Committee

MPCA has reorganized the Clinical Services Committee to represent Michigan Health Centers’ primary health care services. The Committee will be led by a Chair, who also serves as the Clinical Services Representative to the MPCA Board of Directors, and a Vice-chair, and be comprised of Michigan Health Center behavioral health, dental, medical, pharmacy, and quality improvement professionals. There is also one at-large seat on the committee. MPCA is accepting 2014-15 Committee member applications through July 18, 2014, with the one-year term of service beginning August 1, 2014, and continuing through July 31, 2015. You're Invited to Healthy Safety Net Symposium

Many MPCA staff members are planning to attend Healthy Safety Net 2014: A Blues Symposium on September 8, 2014, 10 am-3:30 pm at the Kellogg Hotel & Conference Center in East Lansing. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan would like to extend an invitation for you to join us. The agenda is excellent. Sessions will look at accomplishments of the past year, the first year of coverage expansion under the Affordable Care Act, and then shift our focus from coverage to care as we look ahead at emerging policy, program, and funding opportunities. A few of the agenda highlights are the Breaking News panel revisited with Marianne Udow-Phillips, Geralyn Lasher, and Kirk Roy; and a Report on the Michigan Endowment Fund by Rob Fowler, Board Member. MPCA CEO Kim Sibilsky will present on a panel sharing the front line perspectives, challenges, and opportunities. The Healthy Safety Net symposium is a unique opportunity to engage with experts in safety net health care in Michigan. We encourage you to attend and look forward to seeing you there. Click here to register today.

Governor Snyder Signs Legislation Supporting Breastfeeding Mothers

This week Governor Snyder signed three bills (Senate Bill 674 and House Bills 5591 and 5592) which prevent discrimination against breastfeeding mothers by ensuring that women have the right to breastfeed in a public place, and specify that a mother breastfeeding in a public place is not guilty of indecent exposure or obscene conduct. Read more

Michigan Conrad 30 Program Application Packets Now Available

Michigan’s 2014-2015 Conrad 30 J1 Waiver program is underway and all Health Center Grantees are eligible to participate. This is an excellent recruitment tool to help bring International Medical Graduates to practice at your Health Center. By virtue of being a safety net provider, FQHCs meet the priority criteria for the program. This year’s application process has been updated on the Medical Opportunities in Michigan website under the Conrad 30 tab, and the application packet is available upon request. This year’s application cycle will only be open October 1-30, 2014, so now is the time to plan ahead. As a reminder, a completed Conrad 30 J1 Waiver application requires a signed employment contract, so it is important to begin the recruitment process now! For more information, please contact Ryan Grinnell, MPCA’s Workforce Development Specialist.

New Report Shows Significant Impact of Health Center Funding Cliff on Patients

Last week the Geiger Gibson/RCHN Community Health Foundation Research Collaborative at Milken Institute School of Public Health at the George Washington University released a new report showing that if lawmakers do not act to fix the Health Center funding cliff, and if more states don't expand Medicaid, the number of patients cared for by Health Centers could fall more than 25% - that's 7 million patients - by 2020. Click here to read the report. A snapshot of the findings is also depicted in an infographic.

On June 23, the Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH) Division of Immunization mailed an OB/GYN survey to all OB/GYN provider offices identified in Michigan. The survey results will provide a general overview of Michigan’s OB/GYN provider practices relating to hepatitis B policies and immunization practices. The data will be deidentified and the results will be shared with those who include their contact information. If you are aware of an OB/GYN practice in Michigan that did not receive a copy of this survey, please contact Pat Fineis, Perinatal Hepatitis B Coordinator, via email or call 517.335.9443.
