2014 MPCA Legislative Forum Hotel Reservation Deadline February 11

If you are attending the 2014 MPCA Legislative Forum (#MPCALF14) in Lansing on February 26 and will need a hotel room at the nearby Radisson Hotel, the deadline to reserve a room at MPCA's discounted group rate is next Tuesday, February 11. Registration for the Forum closes on February 19.


NACHC Teleforum Next Tuesday, February 11

All Health Center advocates are strongly encouraged to participate in the national teleforum that the National Association of Community Health Centers (NACHC) is hosting on February 11 at 2 pm ET. During the call, NACHC policy and advocacy staff will share details of the critically important 2014 national advocacy campaign and highlight how YOU can participate to make a difference in the future of Health Centers. MPCA Reinforces Healthy Michigan Plan Enrollment Guidance for Michigan Health Centers in Response to MDCH Timeline

This week the Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH) indicated that wide-scale enrollment for the Healthy Michigan Plan (Michigan’s expanded Medicaid program) will likely begin in April 2014. MPCA's guidance for Michigan Health Centers during this period of coverage transition continues to focus on a stratified approach. New MPCA Resource Increases Awareness of Health Centers' Role Post-ACA

MPCA has prepared talking points for Health Center staff and board members to use when having conversations with the media, legislators, funders, and others about the role of Health Centers post-coverage expansion. Read more

 

MPCA Celebrates 5th Anniversary of CHIPRA
This week marks the 5th anniversary of President Obama signing the Children's Health Insurance Program Authorization Act (CHIPRA) into law. CHIPRA paved the way for significant gains in access to health insurance coverage and health care for children across the country and here in Michigan. Read more

 

ICD-10 Resources Available on MPCA Website

MPCA's website now includes a new ICD-10 webpage and online ICD-10 Resource Library. The current ICD-9 code set will soon be replaced by the more detailed ICD-10, with a deadline for the transition of October 1, 2014. Read more

 

MPCA Co-hosting Multi-Agency Collaborative Webinar Series on Colorectal Cancer Screening

Research shows that colorectal cancer screening reduces mobility and mortality rates when done consistently and appropriately. In spite of this, testing rates remain low among minority, poor, and economically disadvantaged populations, who show high rates of this disease. To assist Health Centers in planning and implementing an effective screening program, MPCA is partnering with the Indiana Primary Health Care Association, Illinois Primary Health Care Association, American Cancer Society, and Michigan Department of Community Health to host a three-part webinar series focused on colorectal cancer screening and presented by top experts in the field. Cherry Street Health Services Opens New Health Center in Barry County

On February 3, 2014, Cherry Street Health Services officially opened Barry Community Health Center in Hastings, Michigan. It is one of the newest Health Center delivery sites in the state, and is part of a nationwide network of more than 1,200 Health Center organizations that are increasing access to care. Read more


Detroit Central City Health Center Opens March 3

 

Detroit Central City Community Mental Health received a New Access Point grant funding from the Health Resources and Services Administration in November 2013. DCC is scheduled to open its new Health Center, Detroit Central City Health Center, located at 3427 Woodward Avenue in Detroit, Michigan, on March 3, 2014. Read more

 

Covenant Community Care's New Health Center on Detroit's East Side to Open April 2014

 

Covenant's east side health center is continuing to move towards completion with an expected finish in March 2014. Read more

 

Federal Funding Helping Expand Healthcare in Houghton

 

Upper Great Lakes Family Health Center has secured funding from the Federal Bureau of Primary Health Care to improve access to quality healthcare in Houghton. This funding is helping form a unique partnership with Portage Health that will transition Portage Health’s existing primary care practice in Houghton into a Family Health Center that is designated as a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC). Governor Snyder Presents Fiscal Year 2015 State Budget Proposal

On February 5, Governor Rick Snyder presented to a joint session of the House and Senate Appropriations Committees his proposed budget for Fiscal Year (FY) 2015, which begins October 1, 2014. There are several areas of particular interest to Michigan Health Centers. Read more


Governor Snyder Creates Office for New Americans

On January 31, Governor Rick Snyder signed executive order 2014-2 to create the Michigan Office for New Americans and he named Grand Rapids community leader, entrepreneur, and immigrant Bing Goei as its director. Governor Snyder announced his vision for this new office during his 2014 State of the State address last month. Read more

 

MDCH Releases New CHAMPS Document Management Portal

Through a new enhancement in CHAMPS, the Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH) has introduced phase I of the Document Management Portal (DMP) now accessible for all CHAMPS users. The tool enables providers and billers to electronically submit supporting documentation for Medicaid electronic claims, and users will notice changes on the CHAMPS screens. Read more


HRSA Announces New Grant Funding Opportunities for Health Center Program Grantees

Affordable Care Act Mental Health Service Expansion-Behavioral Health Integration Supplemental Funding Opportunity: The goal of this funding is to increase the coordination, collaboration, and integration of primary and behavioral health services at existing section 330-funded Health Centers. HRSA anticipates awarding a total of approximately $50 million to around 200 Health Centers. The deadline to apply is March 3, 2014. Affordable Care Act Patient Centered Medical Home Facility Improvements Grant: HRSA anticipates awarding a total of approximately $35 million through competitive one-time capital development awards to 150-175 existing section 330-funded Health Centers for a 2-year project period. Health Centers may use this funding to address facility modifications needed to improve or enhance a Health Center's capacity to deliver care using the PCMH model. The deadline to apply is March 14, 2014.


340B Recertification Begins February 10

Annual recertification of 340B program eligibility for HRSA Health Center grantees and Look-Alikes will begin next Monday, February 10, 2014. HRSA's Office of Pharmacy Affairs (OPA) requires that all 340B-covered entities recertify their site and contact information in the 340B database each year to continue participating in the 340B program. Failure to recertify will result in removal from the program. Read more

 

CMS Issues 2015 Draft Letter to Issuers

This week the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) released its Draft 2015 Letter to Issuers, which outlines guidelines for Qualified Health Plans that want to participate in the Marketplaces for the upcoming year. CMS is requesting comments on the draft letter by February 24, 2014.
