2014 MPCA Legislative Forum Registration Deadline February 19

Registration closes February 19 for attending the 2014 MPCA Legislative Forum (#MPCALF14) in Lansing on February 26. Register TODAY so you don't miss out on the opportunity to talk with your state legislators in Lansing, and to learn about the state's current political climate and its implications for Health Centers and the medically underserved. Click here to learn about MPCA's policy priorities for 2014, which will be discussed in detail during the pre-event conference call on February 20 at 1:30 pm ET. Be sure to check out the other events being held in conjunction with the Forum, including a Health Center Board Member meeting/advocacy session and the February MPCA board of directors meeting/dinner, both on February 25 (the day before the Legislative Forum).


Every Health Center, Every Advocate Called on to Take Action in "Access is the Answer” Campaign

The National Association of Community Health Centers (NACHC) launched the new "Access is the Answer" campaign this week during a national teleforum on February 11. The goal of the campaign is to show every policymaker and every American that protecting and investing in Health Centers is a solution to many of the most difficult problems facing our health care system. It is critical that every Health Center and every advocate participate in the "Access is the Answer" campaign by taking three easy action steps. Read more

MPCA Hosting Summit March 14 on Implementing the Healthy Michigan Plan—Save the Date

Save March 14, 2014, on your calendar to attend "Preparing for the Patient Surge," a day-long Summit focused on preparing for the surge of newly covered patients that is anticipated when the Healthy Michigan Plan is fully implemented. Given the deep impact Healthy Michigan Plan implementation will have on all facets of an organization, MPCA encourages Health Center staff across all disciplines to attend the Summit at the Radisson Hotel in Lansing on March 14 (9:30 am-4:30 pm).


MPCA Submits Comments on MDCH’s Proposed Phase-out of Plan First!

As we've reported in past issues of the MPCA eUpdate and written about on the MPCA blog, it is MPCA’s opinion that the Michigan Department of Community Health's (MDCH) proposal to discontinue Plan First! enrollment as of March 31, 2014, and cease program benefits on June 30, 2014, is premature. MPCA submitted comments to MDCH requesting continuation of the program for a period of time sufficient enough to assure that most women are covered by other insurance and that the need for Plan First! does not appear necessary. Traverse Health Clinic Celebrating National Children's Dental Health Month with Matinee Dental Day

It’s National Children’s Dental Health Month (#NCDHM) and Traverse Health Clinic is celebrating in a fun way. On February 22, 2014, the Michigan Health Center serving Grand Traverse, Benzie, and Leelanau counties is hosting Matinee Dental Day at the State Theatre in Traverse City. Read more

 

Saginaw County Organizations Help Residents Enrolling in Insurance

 

To assist those wishing to enroll in the insurance marketplace, two Saginaw County organizations are teaming up to bring the marketplace to the community. Saginaw Health Plan and Health Delivery Inc. offer assistance at their respective offices on a day-to-day basis, but also developed a program offer enrollment help at Hoyt Public Library, 505 Janes Avenue, in Saginaw. Drive to Enroll Uninsured Kalamazoo-area Residents into Health-care Plans Gathers Steam

 

Since November, Family Health Center, Inc. in Kalamazoo has facilitated about 1,000 applications for insurance. About half of the applicants are now enrolled in a plan, and the remainder still mulling their options or waiting for the start of Healthy Michigan, the state's Medicaid expansion plan. Read more

 

Help Provided to Buy Insurance on Federal Marketplace in Genesee County

 

Local health care organizations, including Hamilton Community Health Network, Genesee Health Plan, Genesee Community Health Center, Genesee County Health Department and the Greater Flint Health Coalition, are working together to offer free enrollment assistance to uninsured and other eligible Genesee County residents interested in purchasing health insurance through the federal Health Insurance Marketplace, www.healthcare.gov. MDCH Director Haveman Presents Department Budget Before House, Senate Panels

Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH) Director James Haveman presented to both the House and Senate Community Health Appropriations Subcommittees this week the department's Fiscal Year 2015 budget as included in Governor's Snyder's budget proposal. During his presentation, Director Haveman highlighted that health care is an economic force in Michigan. Read more


IFF Expands into Michigan

IFF, a leading nonprofit community financial institution, opened an office in Detroit in January 2014. IFF's primary activities are lending and offering finance products, real estate consulting, and applied research for and about the nonprofit sector serving low-income communities. Read more

Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer: Is Your Patient at High-Risk is a case-based CME activity designed to improve primary care providers' ability to identify, evaluate, and manage patients at-risk for hereditary breast ovarian cancer. Read more


NACHC Provides Analysis of New Governance Policy and Revised Health Center Program Site Visit Guide

The Health Resources & Services Administration (HRSA) recently issued Policy Information Notice 2014-1 to clarify governance requirements for all Health Center grantees, Look-Alikes, and sub-recipients. HRSA also recently issued a revised Health Center program site visit guide which serves as the main tool that HRSA consultants use when conducting Operational Site Visits. Both the PIN and site visit guide are incredibly important and impact every Health Center's governance and operations. NACHC has prepared an analysis. Read more


OIG Reports on Contract Pharmacy Arrangements in 340B Program

On February 5, 2014, the Office of the Inspector General (OIG) issued a report regarding contract pharmacy agreements in the 340B Program. This report is the result of Congressional inquiry into the oversight of the 340B program, especially with the recent growth in the program. Read more
