Jillian Lapinski

AmeriCorps Member  |  Oakland Primary Health Services  |  Pontiac, MI

Serving for AmeriCorps at Oakland Primary Health Services (OPHS) has given me my first in depth look into the workings of a community health care system. I feel lucky to be surrounded by such knowledgeable people who work hard and are passionate about making a difference in the Pontiac community. I am learning that health care is much more than just a provider and a patient, and am thankful that this opportunity has helped me develop a new perspective on medicine, especially the importance of preventive care.

This new perspective has partly been a result of working on developing a patient recall and reactivation program. The goal of this program is to ensure our patients come in for the routine care they need, which will hopefully prevent larger health problems in the future. Some of the other things I am excited to be a part of at OPHS include helping develop our community outreach program, working with the Teen Health Centers at the Pontiac Schools, and holding a back-to-school health event for National Health Center Week.

The rewarding feeling I get from knowing I have helped to better the lives of others makes every second worth it. OPHS has opened my eyes to the powerful potential of preventive care and what it means and looks like to really want to help those in need. Both of these are important lessons I plan to incorporate in my future career as a physician. As for now, my year of service with OPHS is still in its early stages and I look forward to seeing where this journey will take me!

Share Your Story

Personal stories bring to life the value of Health Centers and how they benefit patients, families, and communities, and what they mean to board members, providers, staff, and volunteers. MPCA invites you to share how the Health Center in your community has impacted you and your family. If you live in a community that doesn't have a Health Center but would like to establish one, we want to hear how it would benefit your neighbors and the community as a whole. If you work/volunteer for an organization that partners with a Health Center we want to hear from you, too! Please share with us how this partnership is powering healthier communities.

We would also like to hear from individuals who are newly insured, either through a plan in the Health Insurance Marketplace or Medicaid. How have you benefited from insurance coverage? How would you afford health care if you didn't have coverage?

Please complete the form below, or you may email your story. We also welcome your photos, a video or audio recording, and typed and handwritten testimonials (mail to MPCA: Faces of MI Health Centers, 7215 Westshire Drive, Lansing, MI 48917). If you need assistance with audio or video recording, please let us know.
