Faces of Michigan Health Centers: Sarah Steele

Patient | Women's Health Services | Lansing, MI

When I became uninsured I was anxious about going to a Community Health Center because I expected it to be a bad experience. But it was great and now I prefer to go there.

Before I started going to the Health Center I was struggling with a somewhat rare health issue. The doctors I was seeing didn't seem to take my problem seriously. At the Health Center they figured it out right away and now they make sure that I'm able to get the medication I need to make me healthy.

I use the Women's Health Center in Ingham County, Michigan, because they are fantastically nice to me. They are good at dealing with diverse populations. I'm able to discuss really personal things with them and they always sit and listen and seem to understand.

Someone I work with was on the Health Center board of directors. She knew that there was an opening and convinced me to apply. On the board I'm learning things that I'm going to be able to apply in all my community work. In fact, I've already been asked to be on the board of another community organization.

Share Your Story

Personal stories bring to life the value of Health Centers and how they benefit patients, families, and communities, and what they mean to board members, providers, staff, and volunteers. MPCA invites you to share how the Health Center in your community has impacted you and your family. If you live in a community that doesn't have a Health Center but would like to establish one, we want to hear how it would benefit your neighbors and the community as a whole. If you work/volunteer for an organization that partners with a Health Center we want to hear from you, too! Please share with us how this partnership is powering healthier communities.

We would also like to hear from individuals who are newly insured, either through a plan in the Health Insurance Marketplace or Medicaid. How have you benefited from insurance coverage? How would you afford health care if you didn't have coverage?

Please complete the form below, or you may email your story. We also welcome your photos, a video or audio recording, and typed and handwritten testimonials (mail to MPCA: Faces of MI Health Centers, 7215 Westshire Drive, Lansing, MI 48917). If you need assistance with audio or video recording, please let us know.
