Thank You for Contacting Your Senators, Stand By for Updates!
Thank you to everyone who responded to MPCA’s call to action this week by contacting state Senators about the need to extend Medicaid coverage to more low-income working adults in Michigan. Over 450 supporters have sent more than 650 emails through MPCA’s online action alert to state Senators urging them to expand and reform Michigan’s Medicaid program by passing the Healthy Michigan plan (HB 4714). On Wednesday, the Senate Government Operations Committee held a hearing but did not take testimony, and the full Senate was in session but did not vote on HB 4714. Gongwer and MIRS reported that Senate Majority Leader Randy Richardville said a Senate Medicaid substitute bill may be ready for distribution by the middle of next week, that the Senate Government Operations Committee will begin taking public testimony on whatever proposal is presented at its next meeting on July 31, and the full chamber will likely take a vote on August 27 or 28. The Healthy Michigan Workgroup, led by Senator Roger Kahn, has "identified several reforms that would not need federal waiver approval” and "would be linked to fostering independence of Medicaid recipients, increasing personal responsibility, and more” according to Gongwer. The Workgroup has scheduled three more meetings before the end of the month. Please stand ready to contact your state Senator once again in the coming weeks as details of the Senate Medicaid substitute bill is released. [Associated Press / Detroit Free Press / MLive.com]
