Hi, my name is Ted Briningstool Jr. My story is that I was downsized from my job about six years ago. My family’s economic foundation was demolished, and our once good health insurance was gone.


The loss of health insurance particularly hit me hard, given that I have high blood pressure and kidney stones. When we lost our health insurance, I could no longer afford the medication for my high blood pressure so I stopped taking it.


Thankfully, I learned about the Center for Family Health through a friend. I called and made an appointment. At the appointment I learned I was eligible for a big discount on my care and prescriptions.


That made me smile. I knew I had to get back to taking my medication. At the appointment that day, I saw a doctor and we talked about me getting back in control of my blood pressure. Over the next several months, they tried different drugs until they found one that worked.


I also took advantage of the Center’s free classes on nutrition, and depression and anxiety. This helped me immensely and I found myself feeling good and working harder to put my life back together. It is so difficult to feel good when you don’t have a job or health insurance.


I found a part-time job as a nurse’s aide and custodian, and completed Baker College’s medical assistant program. I was finally starting to feel very good about my life again.


Then on March 25, 2012, my family and I received a life-altering blow. Two of our three sons were involved in a horrific car accident. My son Dylan, 20, and his girlfriend Icy were killed. Our son Aaron, 18, was critically injured. I remember…you know, you have hopes, dreams, expectations for your kids, and that all ended that day.


I fell back into depression. It’s hard to sometime talk about it now, but I knew we needed help. I turned again to the Center, this time for counseling for my whole family. The therapy – combined with our faith – is making a difference. We still struggle; it’s been almost two years, and things have improved. My wife and I struggled a bit, but our marriage is now good. I want us to be there for Aaron and Andrew.


Today, I am looking for a medical-assistant job. During our most challenging times, it was scary. But the Center for Family Health has been there in so many ways to fill in the gaps for us. The Center has helped me get back on track in my life and for that I thank them.
