Faces of Michigan Health Centers: Robin Turner

Robin Turner

Board Member | Otto Community Health Clinic | Lansing, MI

In 1989, our County Commissioners wanted to reject a grant to expand the school clinic at Otto Middle School in Lansing, Michigan. Parents and people in the neighborhood got together and convinced the Commissioners to accept the grant. Shortly after that the clinic became a Community Health Center and I was asked to join the Board.

We fought for Otto Community Health Clinic because the services are perfect for the children. They can receive care for the issues they are dealing with right in school. The Health Center staff are on a first name basis with the kids and they really care about them. One of the things that impresses me most about the Health Center is how good the staff are at dealing with diverse groups of people. You know, sometimes the kids will lose their insurance as they get older. They'll continue to come to the school Health Center and the staff remembers them and arranges for them to get whatever care they need.

Share Your Story

Personal stories bring to life the value of Health Centers and how they benefit patients, families, and communities, and what they mean to board members, providers, staff, and volunteers. MPCA invites you to share how the Health Center in your community has impacted you and your family. If you live in a community that doesn't have a Health Center but would like to establish one, we want to hear how it would benefit your neighbors and the community as a whole. If you work/volunteer for an organization that partners with a Health Center we want to hear from you, too! Please share with us how this partnership is powering healthier communities.

We would also like to hear from individuals who are newly insured, either through a plan in the Health Insurance Marketplace or Medicaid. How have you benefited from insurance coverage? How would you afford health care if you didn't have coverage?

Please complete the form below, or you may email your story. We also welcome your photos, a video or audio recording, and typed and handwritten testimonials (mail to MPCA: Faces of MI Health Centers, 7215 Westshire Drive, Lansing, MI 48917). If you need assistance with audio or video recording, please let us know.
