The following statement is attributed to Michigan Primary Care Association’s Chief Executive Officer Kim Sibilsky as it relates to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ (CMS) approval on December 30, 2013, of the Healthy Michigan Plan to expand Michigan’s Medicaid program under the Affordable Care Act.

Michigan Primary Care Association thanks the federal government for approving the state’s Healthy Michigan Plan to extend health insurance coverage to more low-income working adults who are currently uninsured or underinsured in our state.

By having coverage under this innovative plan beginning in spring 2014, nearly half a million Michiganders will ultimately benefit from increased access to primary and preventive health care. The approved plan will generate many positive outcomes for a healthier Michigan including healthier individuals, families, and communities, as well as significant economic benefits for Michigan taxpayers, employers, and the state budget for years to come.

We were honored to work with our partners across the state in advocating for Medicaid expansion throughout 2013—MPCA’s top policy priority last year—and we look forward to continuing these collaborations as we support Michigan Health Centers in their work to educate and assist newly eligible Michiganders in enrolling in the Healthy Michigan Plan. This is one more step toward ensuring all Michigan residents have access to comprehensive, accessible, and affordable health care, the foundation on which Health Centers were established nearly 50 years ago.
