The following statement is attributed to Michigan Primary Care Association’s Chief Executive Officer Kim Sibilsky as it relates to the Michigan Department of Community Health’s announcement on June 18, 2014, that Healthy Michigan Plan enrollment has reached 300,000 enrollees.

Reaching 300,000 enrollees in the Healthy Michigan Plan after just 11 weeks of enrollment is a tremendous milestone to celebrate. Michigan is well on its way to reaching and exceeding the first-year enrollment goal of 320,000 enrollees by the end of 2014. Reaching this milestone attests to the tremendous demand for affordable health care coverage that exists in our state, as witnessed every day by the staff at Michigan Health Centers.

As the largest network of safety net providers, Michigan Health Centers are on the front lines delivering care to the most medically underserved and vulnerable populations in communities across the state. Their enrollment staff have been integral in assisting Michiganders in learning about and enrolling in the Healthy Michigan Plan. Michigan Primary Care Association applauds the work of Health Center outreach and enrollment staff, and of critical enrollment partners, who together strive to improve the health and well-being of their neighbors, their communities, and the state.

Although it has only been 11 weeks since the program launched, the Healthy Michigan Plan has already begun to meaningfully strengthen Michigan’s health care safety net. Healthy Michigan Plan enrollees now have the peace of mind that health coverage brings, and they have increased access to comprehensive, accessible health care.

Michigan’s progress with Healthy Michigan Plan enrollment, together with the 272,539 Michiganders who enrolled through the Health Insurance Marketplace, has brought affordable health coverage to nearly 575,000 residents. That accomplishment is nothing short of astounding. MPCA is hopeful this tremendous early enrollment momentum will carry forward into the weeks and months to come as tens of thousands more Michigan residents gain coverage and health care.
