Addressing COVID-19

Media coverage about the novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) is growing in intensity, as are alarmist claims about the virus. That’s why it’s incredibly important that community health centers serve as a trusted source of information on the issue — both at your health center and in the media. MPCA is working with local, state, and federal partners to ensure that Michigan's community health centers have the information and resources necessary to tackle COVID-19. You can learn more about what health centers across the state are doing to respond to COVID-19 here.

SARS-CoV-2 is a virus that causes respiratory illness (COVID-19) with symptoms (e.g., fever, cough, shortness of breath) that range from mild to severe and may result in death. At this time, the CDC believes that the symptoms of COVID-19 may appear in as few as two days and in as many as 14 days after exposure.

What Health Centers Can Do

Michigan’s health centers are trusted institutions in their communities, and they can play an important role in putting COVID-19 in perspective while encouraging patients to take appropriate prevention and preparedness measures:

  • Emphasize the importance of good hand hygiene. This is an opportunity for health centers to demonstrate proper hand washing technique and/or distribute alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  • Encourage patients to call ahead if they are exhibiting flu-like symptoms and incorporate check-in questions that ask whether patients have traveled outside the country.
  • Review and update emergency plans and procedures, particularly related to pandemic response.
  • If you’re not already a member of the Michigan Health Alert Network, register now.
  • Use resources from the ECRI Institute website. ECRI has developed a COVID-19 Outbreak Preparedness Center to help protect health care workers and patients.
  • Pay close attention to the CDC website and the MDHHS novel coronavirus website, which includes fact sheets in multiple languages.
  • Screen patients for COVID-19 in accordance with CDC criteria for evaluation.
