IT Application Specialist

JOB SUMMARY: Serving as the clinical voice on the technology team, the IT applications specialist assists with the development, implementation, education and utilization of the Health Center’s technology applications. The IT applications specialist integrates technology into workflow processes and provides continuous, hands-on support to all staff users of technology applications.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Achieves and maintains a high level of proficiency with NextGen in order to provide continuous, accessible and effective support to all users.
  • Functions as the primary contact for staff users of all application functions. Coordinates user access to additional support when necessary.
  • Responsible for delivering or facilitating onboarding training for technology applications for all new EJFHC staff.
  • Provides ongoing technology training to current staff.
  • Assists director of technology and systems administrator with installation and maintenance of hardware devices for all users.
  • Demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of EJFHC technology applications.
  • Possesses and demonstrates the ability to map workflow processes, gather and analyze data, and effectively present ideas and change concepts to staff members.
  • Identifies best documentation practices within NextGen and disseminates this training in a comprehensible method to various levels of users.
  • Works cooperatively with various levels of users to design, customize and utilize application software to optimize application performance in Health Center workflow and processes.
  • Facilitates effective communication between users, technology project managers and vendor support to achieve an outstanding training outcome for each user.
  • Demonstrates the ability and willingness to respectfully and effectively communicate with a broad range of users and disciplines.
  • Leads workflow process redesign efforts for the Health Center that includes active user work groups.
  • Evaluates and analyzes changes/upgrades and new functionality in NextGen. Formulates and delivers training plan for staff pertaining to same. maintenance
  • Participates in development and maintenance of downtime procedures for staff.
  • Ensures adequate training is administered to new clinical staff members on hire.
  • As assigned by director of technology, tests and troubleshoots new modules, upgrades and patches to NextGen.
  • Maintains knowledge of NextGen technological developments/trends.
  • Works cooperatively with the director of technology and the system administrator to identify, purchase, test, and implement hardware and software applications that will improve Health Center workflow processes and the patient experience.
  • Provides on-going NextGen system evaluation and advocates for upgrades and maintenance to the system that will improve work flows. Corporate Compliance/Security Responsibilities:
  • Upholds all HIPAA requirements in a manner consistent with EJFHC’s policies, professional standards of conduct, state and federal laws/regulations governing FQHC’s.
  • Upholds security responsibilities for the protection of EJFHC IT systems and data, including:
    • adherence to user password guidelines;
    • restraint from leaving workstation unsecured;
    • appropriate use of Internet access while at work and while utilizing EJFHC devices;
    • use of abundant caution regarding phishing emails; and
    • prompt reporting of lost/stolen IT devices.
  • Reports suspected violations of code of conduct, policies, procedures, laws and regulations to a supervisor, the compliance officer or to the anonymous compliance hotline.

Required Qualifications:

  • Current Michigan licensure/certification/registration in any clinical discipline.
  • Demonstrated experience in optimization of technology in delivery of primary care services; any EHR brand (NextGen, Epic, Cerner, eClinical Works, etc)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • College level coursework in computer science or certification as an EHR “super user” or “subject matter expert”
  • 2-5 years of experience as a clinical EHR trainer; any EHR brand
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively and respectfully communicate orally and in writing with medical professionals, technology professionals, and frontline staff.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
